Frequently Asked Questions

How does Montessori work?
Montessori education operates on the principle of freedom within limits, grounded in core beliefs of respect for the self, others, and the environment. Our approach incorporates a set of ground rules to provide structure while allowing children the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace. Central to this methodology are the Montessori materials, designed to offer concrete manipulation that is multi-sensory, sequential, and self-correcting. These materials not only facilitate skill development but also indirectly teach abstract concepts. With built-in controls of error, children receive immediate feedback, empowering them to correct themselves and learn independently. In this environment, the teacher serves as a facilitator, nurturing active, self-directed learning within the safety of her presence, guiding and supporting each child's individual journey of discovery and growth.

How is discipline dealt with in your school?
At our school, we approach discipline as a means of guiding children towards self-regulation, empathy, and responsibility. We emphasize Montessori principles of respect for oneself, others, and the environment, which form the foundation of our disciplinary approach. Rather than punitive measures, we focus on fostering a positive and supportive learning environment where clear expectations and boundaries are established from the beginning. Our teachers employ proactive strategies such as modelling appropriate behaviour, providing choices, and offering redirection when needed. We encourage open communication between teachers, students, and families to address any concerns and collaboratively find solutions. Through consistent guidance, understanding, and reinforcement of positive behaviour, we empower children to develop self-discipline, respect for others, and a sense of accountability for their actions.

Can children do what they want when they want?
At our school, we believe in providing children with freedom within a carefully structured environment. This freedom allows them to explore their interests, make choices, and take ownership of their learning journey. We offer freedom in various aspects of the educational experience, including the selection of activities, the pace of learning, and the direction of their studies. Within our Montessori classrooms, children have the autonomy to choose from a variety of materials and work independently or collaboratively with peers. Our teachers act as guides, offering support and encouragement while respecting each child's unique abilities and interests. By fostering a culture of freedom and responsibility, we empower children to develop self-confidence, critical thinking skills, and a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

How will my child adjust if / when we decide to move to Mainstream?
When transitioning from our Montessori school to a mainstream educational setting, children are well-prepared to adapt and thrive in their new environment. Throughout their time with us, they have developed essential skills such as independence, self-direction, and a love for learning, which serve as strong foundations for success in any educational setting. Our Montessori approach also emphasizes social-emotional development, teaching children to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and show respect for diverse perspectives. These skills are invaluable as they navigate new relationships and classroom dynamics in the mainstream setting. Additionally, our Bridging Class provides targeted support to ease the transition, ensuring that children feel confident and prepared for the academic and social challenges they may encounter. While adjusting to mainstream schooling may present some initial challenges, our students are resilient and adaptable, equipped with the tools and mindset to embrace new opportunities for growth and learning.

What is your position on religion?
At our school, we uphold the belief that true peace can be achieved through understanding and respecting the diversity of all individuals, including their religious beliefs. While Maria Montessori herself was Catholic, she advocated for an inclusive approach that embraces all faiths and backgrounds. Therefore, we maintain a religiously neutral environment that is not affiliated with any specific religious denomination. Instead, we celebrate cultural and religious festivities in a manner that promotes awareness, respect, and understanding among our students. These celebrations serve as opportunities for children to learn about different cultures and traditions in a fun and factual way. We also encourage families to reinforce their own religious beliefs and practices at home, recognizing the importance of individual faith and spirituality within each family unit. By fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect for diverse beliefs, we strive to nurture a sense of unity and harmony among our students and their families.

What is your position on fantasy?
At our school, we recognize the importance of fostering imaginative play while also guiding children towards a deeper connection with reality. Maria Montessori observed that children possess a natural inclination towards creative imagination rooted in real-world experiences. While fantasy play can be enjoyable, we believe in providing children with opportunities to engage with tangible objects and real-life situations. Our approach values imaginative play as a tool for exploration and self-expression, but we also strive to integrate real objects and practical experiences into the learning environment. By striking a balance between fantasy and reality, we aim to support children in developing a grounded understanding of the world around them while nurturing their creativity and imagination. Through proactive measures and constant vigilance, we prioritize the safety of our school community, providing peace of mind for students, parents, and staff alike.
